Best Free PDF Watermark Tools in 2026 Compared

Best Free PDF Watermark Tools in 2026 Compared

You need to add "Confidential" to a contract, "Draft" to a proposal, or your company logo to a report — and you'd rather not pay for Adobe Acrobat Pro to do it.

There are plenty of free watermark tools. But they differ in ways that matter: how much you can customize, whether your file gets uploaded to a server, and whether the free version stamps its own branding on your document (which rather defeats the purpose of watermarking in the first place).

We compared six tools on what actually matters for professional watermarking.

    What We Evaluated

Text and image watermark support. Can you add custom text, upload a logo, or both?

Customization. How much control do you get over font size, color, opacity, rotation, and position?

Does your file leave your device? Is the PDF uploaded to a server, or processed locally?

Does the tool add its own watermark? Some "free" tools stamp their own branding on your output — which is ironic when you're trying to add your own watermark.

Free tier limits. How many files can you watermark before hitting a paywall?

    1. iLovePDF

One of the most popular PDF suites online, with a clean watermark interface.

Text watermarks: Yes — custom text with font, size, color, and transparency controls.

Image watermarks: Yes — upload an image file to use as a watermark.

Customization: Good. Opacity, rotation, and position controls. Foreground or background placement.

File leaves your device? Yes. PDFs are uploaded to iLovePDF's European servers. End-to-end encryption claimed. Files deleted after two hours.

Tool adds its own watermark? No on basic watermarking. Some other iLovePDF tools add branding on free-tier output.

Free tier: Limited daily usage. Premium starts at $7/month.

Best for: Quick one-off watermarking when the document isn't sensitive and you want both text and image options with layer control.

    2. Smallpdf

A widely known PDF platform with watermarking as one of many tools.

Text watermarks: Yes — custom text with font and size options.

Image watermarks: Smallpdf's watermark tool focuses on text. Image insertion is available through their Edit PDF tool.

Customization: Moderate. Font, size, color, and opacity. Position options are more limited than some alternatives.

File leaves your device? Yes. Files uploaded to Smallpdf's servers. TLS encrypted, deleted after one hour. ISO/IEC 27001 certified.

Tool adds its own watermark? Smallpdf adds "Processed by Smallpdf" branding on some free-tier tool outputs. Check your watermarked file before sharing.

Free tier: 2 tasks per day across all tools.

Best for: Casual users who are already in the Smallpdf ecosystem and need a quick text watermark.

    3. Sejda

A capable PDF toolkit with one of the more feature-rich watermark tools available online.

Text watermarks: Yes — with font, size, color, opacity, and custom positioning via X/Y coordinates.

Image watermarks: Yes — supports PNG, JPG, GIF, and SVG uploads.

Customization: Excellent. Sejda offers the most granular control of any online tool — pixel-perfect positioning, page range selection, batch processing, and template saving for reuse.

File leaves your device? Yes. Files are uploaded to Sejda's servers. Encrypted connection. Files deleted after processing. Desktop version available for local processing.

Tool adds its own watermark? No, within the free tier limits.

Free tier: 3 tasks per day. Files up to 50MB and 200 pages.

Best for: Power users who need precise control, batch watermarking, or saved templates — and don't mind the server upload.

    4. PDF24

A German-made PDF toolkit that's completely free with no daily limits.

Text watermarks: Yes — basic text watermark with font, size, and color.

Image watermarks: Yes — upload an image to use as a watermark.

Customization: Basic to moderate. Fewer controls than Sejda or iLovePDF. Position and opacity adjustable but less granular.

File leaves your device? Yes, for the online version. Files go to PDF24's servers in Germany. GDPR compliant. Desktop version (Windows only) processes locally.

Tool adds its own watermark? No. PDF24 never adds its own branding to output files.

Free tier: Completely free with no limits — the most generous offering on this list.

Best for: Heavy users who watermark frequently and want unlimited free usage without worrying about daily caps. The trade-off is less customization and server-side processing.

    5. Watermarkly

A dedicated watermarking platform (not a general PDF suite) designed specifically for adding watermarks to PDFs and images.

Text watermarks: Yes — with 30+ visual effects and extensive font options.

Image watermarks: Yes — supports PNG, JPEG, and BMP with transparency support.

Customization: Strong. Multiple effects, batch processing, page range selection, and behind-text placement.

File leaves your device? Yes. Files are uploaded for processing.

Tool adds its own watermark? Yes — the free version adds a small Watermarkly logo to output files. Paid version ($19.95/year) removes it.

Free tier: Unlimited files, but output includes Watermarkly branding.

Best for: Users who primarily watermark images and occasionally need PDF watermarking — and don't mind the Watermarkly logo on free output.

    6. EdgeDocs

Browser-based watermarking that runs entirely on your device — no upload, no server.

Text watermarks: Yes — any custom text with "Confidential" as the default.

Image watermarks: Yes — upload PNG or JPG files (logos, stamps, seals).

Customization: Full control. Font size (12–120px), any color via picker or hex, opacity (5–100%), rotation (−180° to 180°), and six position options: Center, Top-Left, Top-Right, Bottom-Left, Bottom-Right, and Tile (repeating pattern). Live preview updates in real-time as you adjust settings.

File leaves your device? No. All processing happens in your browser. The PDF is never sent to any server. You can disconnect from the internet after loading the page and the tool still works.

Tool adds its own watermark? No.

Free tier: 3 downloads per day across all tools. Pro at $7.99/month for unlimited.

Best for: Anyone watermarking sensitive documents — contracts, NDAs, financial reports, HR materials, legal drafts — who wants full customization without the privacy trade-off of uploading to a server.

    Which Tool Should You Use?

If your document is sensitive and shouldn't be uploadedEdgeDocs is the only browser-based option where your file genuinely never leaves your device. Full customization, live preview, text and image support, zero server involvement.

If you need page-range control and saved templates — Sejda has the most granular watermark controls of any online tool. The trade-off is server-side processing and a 3-task daily limit.

If you want unlimited free watermarking and don't mind uploading — PDF24 is completely free with no limits and no branding added to output.

If you need batch watermarking for large volumes — Sejda's free tier handles this, or PDF24 for unlimited batch processing. EdgeDocs doesn't yet support batch watermarking.

If you're already using Smallpdf or iLovePDF — their watermark tools work fine for casual use, but watch for free-tier branding on output files.

    Making Watermarks Permanent

One thing every tool on this list has in common: the watermarks they add can potentially be removed by someone with the right PDF editor, since most tools add the watermark as a separate layer.

To make your watermark truly irremovable, flatten your PDF after watermarking. Flattening merges all layers into a single rendering — the watermark becomes part of the page image itself and cannot be separated or deleted.

For complete document security: watermark → flatten → strip metadata. This produces a branded, tamper-resistant document with no hidden data.

    The Privacy Question

The documents that need watermarking are almost always sensitive. You're adding "Confidential" because the content is confidential. You're adding "Draft" because it's not ready for circulation. You're adding your logo because the content is proprietary.

Every tool on this list except EdgeDocs uploads your document to a server before applying the watermark. They encrypt it, they delete it after processing, and they comply with data protection regulations. But your unredacted, unwatermarked document still existed on their infrastructure.

If the content doesn't matter — a flyer, a menu, a public report — use whatever's fastest. If the content matters, think about where the file goes before the watermark is applied.
